Aspley Woods XC Trail Grading

Please remember  Aspley Woods XC Trail Grading information is only for guidance and YOU should always satisfy yourself aspley_trails2that your choice of bike and your personal riding skills are adequate for riding anywhere within Aspley Woods and the surrounding area.

Mountain biking is a potentially hazardous activity and those riding anywhere in Aspley Woods or the surrounding area do so at their own risk.

Aspley Woods XC Trail Grading follows conventions used at  bike parks and mountain biking trail centres throughout the UK.  These gradings are always provided as a guide that informs riders of the likely difficulty of their various trails.

Though not a bike park nor a trail centre, here at Aspley Woods, Woburn Bike Trails in conjunction with B1KE has adopted a similar grading system to that often used. Whilst this grading follows a convention it does not signify that all Black or all Red trails (or Blue or Green trails for that matter) can be expected to be the same wherever they are.

Aspley Woods XC Trail Grading as applied to any trails within this area is therefore provided only as a guide and riders using these trails should fully satisfy themselves as to the suitability of any trails for their own level of competence before riding them.

As good as any grading system may be, trail surfaces will vary throughout the year – and particularly during or after heavy rain. If in doubt, stop and walk through a section rather than riding ‘blind’.

ASPLEY WOODS XC TRAIL GRADING GREEN – FAMILY TRAIL GRADING (Easy)

Cycle trails more suited to beginner cyclists and families Suitable bikes include mountain bikes, hybrid bikes, bikes with child seats or trailers, touring bikes, bikes for those with disabilities.

GREEN trails are typically either flat or with shallow climbs and descents but may include short, more difficult sections. with a minimum content of overly difficult or loose surfaces.

These trails carry a very low risk however parents, guardians and riders should always take care when riding GREEN sections and ensure their riding ability is suitable for such trails.

ASPLEY WOODS XC TRAIL GRADING BLUE – NOVICE TO INTERMEDIATE TRAIL GRADING (Moderate)

Cycle/MTB trails more suited to those cyclists with some experience of off-road cycling and reasonably fit families. Suitable bikes include mountain bikes or cycle-cross/touring bikes.

Trails typically unsuitable for road bikes, hybrid bikes or bikes with trailers/child seats.

BLUE trails often have steeper climbs and descents and may include longer, more difficult technical sections with roots and other obstacles , off-camber sections, and small rollable drop-offs.  Trails will often have loose or more challenging surfaces including singletrack.

These trails carry a moderate risk and therefore parents, guardians and riders should take additional care when riding BLUE trail sections and ensure their riding ability is suitable for such trails.

One or two clearly marked RED sections/obstacles may be offered as an alternative/diversion for more experienced/technically competent riders to use.

ASPLEY WOODS XC TRAIL GRADING RED – INTERMEDIATE TO EXPERIENCED TRAIL GRADING (Difficult)

Cycle/MTB trails suitable only for more experienced riders with the sufficient skills and experience to ride technical and challenging mountain bike trails. Riders should ideally also have a reasonable level of fitness to cope with sustained effort and steep climbs or descents.

Trails suitable for proper mountain bikes and are unsuitable for road bikes, hybrid bikes or bikes with trailers/child seats.

RED trails will have much more difficult technical sections with significant roots and other obstacles, steeper off-camber sections and larger steps/drop-off that may not be fully rollable. Clearly marked A and B routes will often provide a slightly less technical option for those wishing to avoid an obstacle.

These trails carry a potentially high risk and therefore parents, guardians and riders should take great care when riding RED trail sections and ensure their riding ability is suitable for such trails.

Several clearly marked RED + or BLACK sections may be offered as an alternative/diversion for very experienced/technically competent riders to use.

ASPLEY WOODS XC TRAIL GRADING BLACK – EXPERIENCED ONLY TRAIL GRADING (Severe)

Unforgiving and extreme MTB trails suitable only for the most experienced riders with very high levels of skills and the experience to ride very technical and highly challenging mountain bike trails. Riders should also have a high level of fitness to cope with sustained effort and steep climbs or descents.

Trails suitable only for proper mountain bikes, jump bikes and downhill bike.

BLACK trails will have very difficult technical sections with severe unavoidable obstacles that may include: very steep climbs and descents, large steps/drop-offs that may not be rollable and jumps that may need to be taken at speed. There are usually no A and B route options for those wishing to avoid an obstacle. ALL OBSTACLES will have to be ridden.

These trails carry a very high risk and therefore all riders should take the highest level of care when riding BLACK trail sections and ensure their riding ability is suitable for such trails.
